Johnson's journal, written with Gretchen and Andrew, was published in Tissue Engineering with the title, "Transforming Growth Factor-Beta, Bone Morphogenetic Protein, and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Mediate Phenotype Maturation and Tissue Remodeling by Embryonic Valve Progenitor Cells: Relevance for Heart Valve Tissue Engineering." The lab would like to say a special farewell to Catagay, our post-doc who will be returning to Turkey to work as an assistant professor. We would like to thank him for his work and help, and we also hope he enjoyed his first experience playing a relaxing game of mini-golf before leaving the states.

Dr. Butcher is invited to participate in the U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium hosted by the National Academy of Engineering. The symposium, which will take place on Sept. 23-25 in Armonk, N.Y, will examine cloud computing, autonomous aerospace systems, engineering and music, and engineering inspired by biology. Dr. Butcher was one of the 86 young engineers who were invited to participate among 265 applicants. Congratulations!
The lab hosted 4-H Science and Engineering Program for the 2nd time. 15 high school students were invited to join our lab to learn about developmental biology and tissue engineering through hands-on lessons planned by the students in the lab.
We congratulate all the graduates in the lab! We have quite a large number of students graduating from the lab this year. The graduating students are: (M.Eng.) Prof. Butcher won 1st place for the second year in a row at the Public Engagement and Science Communication Symposium poster competition, where he was awarded for clearly explaining his research titled "Smart Nanoparticles for Detailed Imaging in Live Embryos" to a diverse audience pool. Congratulations!
Phil received a NSF GK-12 Certificate of Accomplishment at the NSF GK-12 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC! He was acknowledged for using his current research to help students learn and develop interest in science and engineering. Please welcome our latest lab members, Sarah Ajaeb and Nichita Ciapurin! Sarah is a M.S. student in Mechanical Engineering who will be studying biomechanics in the lab. She was recently awarded an honorable mention in the NSF Graduate Fellowship for her proposal on biomechanics. Nichita is a junior undergraduate in Biological Science and Chemistry, and he was involved in stem cell research before joining the lab. Welcome!
Ravi and Kevin will be presenting their posters at the Upstate New York Biomedical Engineering Career Conference (UNYBECC) in Rochester, NY.
Michelle was awarded the 2010-2011 Whitaker International Fellowship, a program in which biomedical engineers undertake projects worldwide. She will be studying the behavior of valve interstitial cells (VIC) in degradable PEG hydrogels at University of Cape Town, South Africa. Congratulations!
Laura was awarded a highly competitive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship for her research on bioprinting of living heart valves. Congratulations Laura!
The Butcher Lab offered tour and hands-on activities for 25 AP Biology student from Oneida High School. Students learned the main research aims of our lab through interactive demonstrations of several experimental techniques including: bioprinting, ex-ovo chick culture, and cushion isolation.
Congratulations to Gretchen, who took 1st place in the Heart Valve Biology & Tissue Engineering Conference poster session held in Hilton Head, SC! Her poster titled "Inflammation Reactivates Developmental Programming in Adult Valve Cells: Novel Mechanisms for Valve Disease and Regeneration" was selected from over 50 other posters.
The Butcher Lab was well represented at the Heart Valve Biology & Tissue Engineering Conference in Hilton Head, SC! In total, the Butcher lab presented four podium talks and two posters.
Butcher Lab had the 2nd Annual White Elephant gift exchange at the Christmas party. The exchange was highlighted with some cool and unusual/funny gifts such as the foot massager and the leopard-pattered seat cushion. We all had a good time, and we look forward to it again next year!
Undergraduate student Michelle Sun won 4th place in BMES 2009 Undergraduate Research Competition. The competition is a highly selective process that only allows 9% of all applicants to enter the final evaluation. Among the 20 final contestants, Michelle was able to stand out and win 4th place. Great job Michelle!
Professor Butcher and our fellow researchers including Gretchen, Cagatay, Russ, Philip, Laura, Michelle, and Dave attended the BMES 2009 in Pittsburgh. In the conference, Professor Butcher, Gretchen, Laura, and Philip were invited to give speeches about their research projects while others gave poster presentations.
Prof. Butcher received the 2009 BMES Rita Schaffer Young Investigator Award at the BMES 2009 Conference! He was selected for the unique way in which he has combined developmental biology with engineering for applications in regenerative medicine. He will be giving an award presentation at the meeting in Pittsburgh. Congratulations to the boss!

Cornell hosted New York science teachers for hands-on summer workshops. The teachers were provided with hands-on labs, field experiences, lectures, and visits to research labs. The visit was highlighted with a demonstration to using living embryo culture system to learn about heart development.

High school students interested in bioscience were invited for hands-on research experience in the lab. Students learned various aspects in biomedical engineering such as MicroCT imaging, tissue fabrication, cardiac patching, and histology.
Professor Butcher and the Butcher lab will present three posters at the upcoming 5th Biennial meeting of the Society for Heart Valve Disease in Berlin, Germany.

Undergraduate student Grant Tarsi was awarded a 2009 Undergraduate Summer Research Award by Cisco, Inc. for his research on microelectrode arrays for local biomechanical measurement. Great job Grant!

Huseyin Yalcin and his team will present their research named "Non-invasive defect and rescue models of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome via pulsed laser photoablation." at Cornell University Postdoc Research Day, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

Two groups of people will give presentation of their research progress in the BioExpo Conference 2009. Nicholas Colangelo and his team, will present a poster presentation of his research, Solid freeform fabrication of mechanically heterogeneous cell-seeded hydrogels, at BioExpo2009, Cornell University, Ithaca NY. Postdoctoral Huseyin Yalcin and his team will give a poster presentation titled "A noninvasive defect model of congenital heart defects via pulsed laser photoablation.” in the conference as well.
On Feb. 10th, 2009, Professor Butcher will give a seminar on his research thrusts entitled "Recapitulations of Developmental Biology in Valvular Heart Disease Prescribe Engineering Paradigms for Regenerative Medicine" at University of Pennsylvania, Institute for Medicine and Engineering Seminar.
M.Eng student Philip Cheung will present the research by biorpinter group titled "Solid freeform fabrication of arbitrary heterogeneous, anisotropic structures with multiple materials.” at the 7th New York Complex Matter Workshop, Ithaca, NY.

Adam Neumann will be presenting a poster at the BMES annual Fall Conference based on his work on automated ultrasound deformation mapping.
Chen Si, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Tongii Medical School and Huazong University of Science and Technology in China, will spend the next year in the Butcher Lab learning heart valve mechanobiology and tissue engineering. Previously, he was a medical resident in Cardiology at Wuhan Central Hosptial. Welcome Chen!
